Latin Alliance Biographical Summary
The Latin Alliance is a rap, DJ, and music production group initially formed in 1989 by Kid Frost, Markski, Zulu Gremlin, Lyrical Engineer Genius G, and KDAY Mixmaster Tony G. The group expanded to other partners including Mellow Man Ace, Lyrical Latin, A.L.T., Rayski, (periodically including Sen Dog of Cypress Hill), KDAY Mixmasters Julio G, Ralph M, also The Baka Boyz, Will Roc, and Scoop Deville.
The group’s establishment was quite natural as many of the members had already been contributing to Kid’s Frost’s Hispanic Causing Panic album and several members already had emcee, DJ, and production relationships with each other from the mid or latter-80s Los Angeles rap scene. The Latin Alliance album concept involved a broad variety of Latino artists who would each represent his own heritage and his own style. Once again, Virgin Records enthusiastically embraced the idea and signed the members to an album contract. The self-titled album was recorded mostly in Los Angeles in 1990 through ’91, and was released in ’91.
The Latin Alliance is part of the foundation of the Los Angeles-based rap explosion throughout the world. It is recognized by many globally as the first Latino/ bilingual rap group on a major record label. The group inspired not only a following among English and other language audiences, with descendants from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Spain, etc., they also inspired a deep following in many Latino and Spanish-speaking countries, which remains after decades. The album reached #133 on the US Billboard 200 chart, #83 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (Billboard) chart, and #18 on US Heatseekers Albums (Billboard). With that, the group greatly helped to ignite a street-level movement and a global multi-billion dollar rap industry genre. As such, each of the members and their work represent a key part of music history.
